KTM Tech3 team boss Herve Poncharal criticized Iker Lecuona for a mistake in Austin, which he believes he makes too often.
Herve Poncharal did not hide his frustration after a Grand Prix of the Americas to forget about the Tech 3 team, which left Austin empty. Iker Lecuona was in a position to score. After passing 19th in the first lap, the Spaniard climbed to 15th position, but a mistake caused him to lose two places. Finally he was 16th at the finish line, almost two seconds behind Valentino Rossi, who took the last point.
The Valencian completed good performances at the end of the summer in Austria, Britain and Aragon, but retired due to a fall in Misano. After a mistake at Texas, Poncharal lamented his driver’s lack of consistency.
“Another very frustrating weekend for the Tech3 KTM Factory Racing team,” summarized Poncharal. “This time Iker did not make a good start, which is usually quite good. It took him a while to regain positions and his comeback made us happy. We hoped he could score some points, which was the goal.”
“But again, as has happened so often, Iker made a mistake in the middle of the race, which cost him a lot of time and some places. Although he recovered again and was faster than those in front of him, he could not catch them all. He finished 16th, which is the worst possible result. We would have liked to score a point with at least one of our drivers. It’s frustrating and a deja vu. We have to work on consistency and that is the goal for the next races. “
Lecuona – who made his MotoGP debut in COTA – thought he had the pace to score points, but thinks his chaotic first lap made it too difficult for him.
“In general, it has been a difficult weekend,” admitted the # 27. “I didn’t feel good on the bike in these conditions, so it was hard for me. I did the warm up alone and my pace was maybe good enough to be close to the top 10.”
“But in the race several riders hit me on the first lap, two or three times in the first corners, so I was very far behind. I tried to come back, but I forced a lot on the rear tire in the first laps, so I had no grip I tried to catch up with Rossi in the last ten laps and I got him back almost three seconds, but then he got away a lot. “
Danilo Petrucci finished 20th and did not score either. The current pair of the French team have three races left in MotoGP.
“I know that our two riders have tried and pushed, but for now it is not enough. Hopefully it will go a little better next time, in the second race at Misano,” concluded Poncharal.
