The Dutchman Rinus ‘VeeKay’ van Kalmthout will drive Indycar again for Ed Carpenter Racing in 2022. The 21-year-old driver from Hoofddorp is entering his third season in the American top class with the team from Indianapolis.
Van Kalmthout made his debut for Ed Carpenter Racing in 2020 in the Indycars and finished that season as rookie of the year with one podium and one pole position and the fourteenth place in the final standings behind his name. In 2021, Van Kalmthout achieved his first Indycar victory, in the Indianapolis Grand Prix in mid-May. In the famous Indy 500 this year, he caused a furore by qualifying on the front row and finishing eighth.
“I’m looking forward to another season with Ed Carpenter Racing,” said Van Kalmthout. “We’ve made a lot of progress this year and made great memories, like my first Indycar win. I think we can do even better next year. We want to participate for the title and win more often and take podiums,” says the Dutchman, who thinks he is with the right team in that regard. “It feels like a group of friends who work hard together for success.”
The fact that Van Kalmthout would stay with Ed Carpenter Racing had been in the air for some time. Although there was interest from other teams, the relationship with ‘ECR’ is good and he sees potential for further growth together. ‘VeeKay’ has one more race to go this year, Sunday evening at 9:00 PM Dutch time in Long Beach. Van Kalmthout is currently eleventh in the championship, with a view to the top ten. He starts in Long Beach in 24th place. The race can be seen at Ziggo Sport Racing.
