Emma Raducanu is ‘just’ in the semifinals of the US Open. Raducanu defeated Olympic champion Belinda Bencic in the quarterfinals 6-3 6-4. After her elimination in the 8th finals of Wimbledon, everyone thought that the 18-year-old tennis star had been lucky. In New York, the British tennis player show that she is more than a simple talent: she is in the semifinals.
The semifinalist has yet to lose a set at the US Open, while they are also still playing the qualifiers. For the first time there is a qualifier in the semi-final in New York in the women’s schedule.
“Playing Belinda, she is such a great opponent,” Raducanu said after the match.
“Her ball speed definitely caught me off guard. She hits the ball so hard, and I had to adjust and adapt. I’m just so happy to come through.”
The debutante in New York started badly by handing in her serve immediately. From 1-3 behind, she won 5 games in a row. The British teenager played excellently and without nerves. Bencic, number 12 in the world, had nothing to object to. That while the Swiss is in great shape and recently took gold at the Games in Tokyo.
Raducanu didn’t care. She is 150th in the world ranking and will make a giant leap after her performance at the American glandslam tournament. Because in the 2nd set she continued to play strong. One break was enough for her to serve for the match. She didn’t blush when she came in 0-30 and made 4 points in a row: semi-final here she comes!
