Emma Raducanu, surprise winner of the US Open, jumped 127 places to find herself 23rd in the world. Six Top 10 players have changed rankings, starting with Naomi Osaka, now fifth. On the French side, Caroline Garcia is now number 1.
The WTA waited until early afternoon to publish its new ranking. Perhaps the computer of the women’s tennis court was also having a hard time believing that Emma Raducanu, after qualifying, could have won a Grand Slam tournament and 127 places in the standings. Yet that is exactly what happened. Ranked 150th in the world, Raducanu, who won his first Grand Slam tournament at not even 19 without losing a set, is now 23rd. The one she beat in the final, the Canadian Leylah Fernandez, climbed 45 places to reach the 28th place at the age of 19.
Pliskova and Svitolina overtake Osaka
Six changes are to be noted within the Top 10. If Ashleigh Barty and Aryna Sabalenka still occupy the first two places, the podium is now completed by Karolina Pliskova, who benefits from the two-place drop of Naomi Osaka, who won last year. Elina Svitolina also wins one place, Barbora Krejikova two places, Garbine Muguruza and Petra Kvitova one place each. On the other hand, a big tumble for Bianca Andreescu, winner of the US Open 2019, who loses thirteen places to find herself 20th. Serena Williams is 41st, after dropping 19 places.
Garcia becomes number 1 in France
On the French side, they are now six in the Top 100 with the return of Océane Dodin, but they are all classified from 60th place, since none has shone on the New York courts. After Alizé Cornet two weeks ago, it is now Caroline Garcia who has the status of No. 1 tricolor, but she is only 60th. This week, apart from Garcia and Burel, all the Bleues of the Top 100 are playing in Luxembourg or Portoroz.
