Infinity Ward revealed more details about Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 during its Call of Duty Next presentation.
Warzone 2.0 is a brand new free battle royale experience that builds on the foundation of the first Call of Duty: Warzone. Players are dropped in a desert environment in a fictional region of western Asia. The new map is called Al Mazrah. Activision Blizzard calls it “the most ambitious release in Call of Duty history”.
Some major changes are being made. For example, Warzone 2.0 contains a new circle mechanic. Instead of one circle forcing players closer together, there are multiple circles. That should have a big impact on the final battles. In addition, Al Mazrah contains an AI faction. That means players can expect pve elements for the first time.
The Gulag is also undergoing an overhaul. When players die, they end up in Gulag 2.0 where they now fight in two against two for freedom and have to pick up weapons from the ground themselves. In addition, the game gets several new social features, anti-cheat software Ricochet and a brand new DMZ mode. The latter is a large sandbox-style mode that is available immediately upon release and is separate from the battle royale. The game runs on the same engine as Modern Warfare 2 which, according to Activision, was developed specifically for the current generation of consoles. The upcoming Call of Duty installments will all be built on the same engine.
In addition to Warzone 2.0, Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile will be released on mobile devices in 2023. This version features authentic operators, weapons and locations and lets 120 players compete in battle royale matches. The game features cross progression and a shared battle pass with Warzone 2.0. The game does get exclusive events, playlists and other content. The mobile version is being developed by several studios, including Activision Shanghai Studio, Beenox, Digital Legends and Solid State Studios.
Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 is out November 16 on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, and PC. The game will also be available on Steam for the first time in years. Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer and story mode will launch on all platforms on October 28.
